Barco do Vinho is the Portuguese word for Wine Boat - the boats that in the past brought the barrels of wine from the vineyards in Callaecia (Northern Portugal) on the river Douro to the town of Porto. The CD features four exclusive songs by the Northern-Portuguese group Sangre Cavallum and four exclusive songs by the Austrian group Allerseelen - ancient and traditional but at the same time brand-new avant-garde music, somewhere between apocalyptic folklore and psychedelic rock. Poetical songs about wine taken down rivers with crews of strong men, floating down throats with crews of sparkling spirits. Inspired by the vineyards that welcome the sun bringing character to grapes. Then a silent darkness, a timeless life inside oak barrels turn wine into flavoured blood for a toast between men and nature. this CD is sold for the price of a mCD or 7"-single, despite the length of 45 minutes is even albumlength. Barco do Vinho was originally planed as a split-7", but the artists were so much inspired by this theme, that in the end we received a brilliant split-album. although we changed the medium from 7" to CD, we decided to keep the price of the originally planed medium.

  I?m gonna move swiftly on to a discussion of the huge weight of excellent music emanating from within the wider musical Underworld. Firstly, let?s address the excellent new split album BARCO DO VINHO from two of my favourite heathen bands, Austria?s Allerseelen and Sangre Cavallum from northern Portugal?s Galicia region. Released on Allerseelen?s own Ahnstern label and clearly instigated by that band?s leader Gerhard, this album of devotional songs to the divine properties of wine is split into four songs from each band. As Odin himself discovered wine, and its roots go back at least into the Neolithic period, this subject is particularly dear to my heart, and Gerhard?s inspiring and intriguing combination of samples, chants and traditional instruments conspire to evoke a similar mood to Holger Czukay?s own solo LPs, most exhilarating on the martial rhythms of ?In Vino Veritas?. In comparison, Sangre Cavallum?s rich southern folk sound is shot through with umpteen layers of reeds, bagpipes, monkish singing and an Ur-Keltic mystery that also recalls parts of central Spain and the folk songs of the more insular Nuoro regions of Sardinia.   Barco do Vinho is a concept album about wine and related artwork which shows how the wine was transferred along the rivers! The first four tracks are from Allerseelen, they were recorded between November 2005 and August 2006 and are dedicated to Gerhard's girlfriend, Katia. As always in the past and now the music is closely bound and related to the topic, even if it is composed from out of this world sounds or if it is melodies. So this time the point is to create a unique "Dionysian" atmosphere. The track that starts the cd is "O coracao meu", a song perfect for a journey and opens the ground for "Zauberblut" one of the most melodic and folk songs that Gerhard has ever written. The lyrics are from Alfred Schuler (1865-1923, German mystic and poet). "Zu später Stunde" is a beautiful apocalyptic pop song, something favorite to Gerhard, but my favorite song is the one that closes the first half of the album: "In vino veritas". Its rhythm and cold atmosphere probably must place it closer to industrial. The artwork is as always accompanied with extracts from book or poems since the care that Gerhard gives to each detail makes the unique music that he records even more magic. This time the lyrics are from Friedrich Hoelderlin (German poet and writer, 1770-1843) to whom was dedicated and the song "Dunkelheit" ("Gotos=Kalanda" 2LP). The Portuguese band Sangre Cavallum is following with "Wein, Blut der Erde" which exhibits an imposing character and beautiful melodies. After the first minutes the rhythm is faster which later gives its place to melodies alongside with recitations. "Cantaros d'euforia" is a magnificent melodic folk song with rich sound. The calm introduction of "Rabello" enters the listener to a nostalgic hall who feels like seeing the boats carrying the wine. The rhythmic and magical "Weinwalzer" which closes the cd has already its place to my favorite songs ever. However it is probably the most "central-European" song from the four. The dreamy sound of Sangre Cavallum is explained from the unique variety of the organs that were used: among others we find the kantele (Finish organ), zither (stringed organ coming from the Alpine region), traditional Portuguese organs, mandolins and piano. May everyone was facing with the same respect their self, whatever they are doing, their country and their history.

  ?Barco do Vinho' ist eine Split-CD, zu der Allerseelen und die portugiesische Gruppe Sangre Cavallum jeweils 4 Stücke beisteuern. Der Titel ist portugiesisch und nicht allzu schwer zu übersetzen: ?Weinboot'. Ebenso alkoholisch wie die Ladung dieser Boote ist der Inhalt der Stücke, die von eben jenen Weinbooten, die einst auf dem Fluß Douro Weinfässer von den Anbaugebieten in die Stadt Porto brachten, sowie deren inhaltlichen wie menschlichen Kontexten inspiriert wurden. Über Allerseelen muss nicht mehr viel gesagt werden. Die Musik kommt in der gewohnten Weise daher und besteht aus den typischen Versatzstücken, die in hypnotischen Schleifen Rhythmus und Struktur der Stücke bilden und zu denen Gerhard seinen Text spricht. Hier jedoch schenke ich einzig ?O Coracao Meu' wegen des lebendigen und abwechslugnsreichen portugiesischen Gesanges mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Zu Sangre Cavallum soll etwas mehr gesagt werden, zum einen, weil sie weitaus weniger bekannt sind, zum zweiten, weil sie auf der Platte viel abwechslungsreicher daherkommen. Das erste Stück ?Wein, Blut der Erde', das Gerhard mit seinem Gesang unterstützt, ist sehr spannend arrangiert und erinnert mit den akustischen und elektrischen Gitarrenläufen und den beiden Stimmen an südlich angehauchten Psychedelic-Folk. Zum Schluß hin geht es in einen zirkusartigen Tanzrhythmus über. Sehr schön. ?Cantaros d'Euforia' wechselt zwischen folkigen und rezitierenden Passagen, wird von einem Streicher- und Flötenarrangements und leichter Elektronika (glaub ich jedenfalls, oder ist es die E-Gitarre?) abgerundet und endet mit Meeresrauschen. Was will man mehr. ?Rabello' dauert fast 10 Minuten und beginnt mit einer andächtigen Stimmung, die mit ihrem choralartigen Gesang an die Abenddämmerung eines Tages erinnert, der müde gemacht hat. Im Laufe des Stückes klingt es dann aber, als hebe man doch noch einmal die Gläser. Dazu spielt die Sackpfeife auf. ?Weinwalzer' huldigt schließlich im ¾ Takt noch einmal auf entspannt-heitere Weise dem Weingenuß, dazu gibt es dann zum letzten Mal Streicher, Ambienz und Gerhard. Insgesamt eine Platte, die in der zweiten Hälfte sehr viel Spaß macht.

  This new release looked promising. Not only is it a collaboration with Sangre Cavallum whose two albums I enjoyed, the vinological theme should be fruitful as well. Barco do Vinho (Portuguese for 'wine boat') contains eight exclusive songs, four by each band. The first half is offered by Allerseelen. 'Ó Coração Meu' has a mysterious atmosphere, but arouses my thirst just a little. Things really start for me with 'Zauberblut', with some typical Allerseelen loops of acoustic sounds and classical melodies, combined with masculine half-spoken vocals. The wine starts to raise the spirits, because 'Zu später Stunde' has a forceful beat which invites you to a little dance. The uptempo mood is continued with 'In vino veritas', which has a comparable rhythm as the classic 'Gletscherlicht'. Then it's time for the northern Portuguese band Sangre Cavallum to join with their folkloristic sounds. Like before they build up their songs with a wide variety of instruments, including many traditional acoustic ones. The deep vocals fit well to the music.'Wein, Blut der Erde' is a melancholic drinking song, after which 'Cântaros d'Euforia' changes the mood again, an interesting track with a strange psychedelic feel to it. 'Rabello' tries to sober the drinking crowd again, with a slow hymnlike song with a nice folk/rock ending. Then it's time for a final drinking round with the addictive 'Weinwalzer', which makes the crowd finish the night in a last unsteady collective dance. It's a good thing that Allerseelen and Sangre Cavallum decided to elaborate this concept from a planned single to a full album. Barco do Vinho is a release with a rich variety of styles and moods, that is a perfect companion for an evening with friends and tasteful (Portuguese) wine.

  Barco do Vinho is an ode to wine, to the intoxication of wine and to one of Europe's most characteristic wine area's: Gallaecia in Portugal and Spain. Especially the Minho region is known for it's wine ranks as far as you can see, the wine houses of Oporto, the ships filled with barrels of wine transporting the divine liquid to all regions of the world and of course for the beautiful landscape. The release is a split release of the Austrian avantgarde folk artist Allerseelen and the Portuguese traditional neoclassical outfit Sangre Cavallum of whom each has delivered 4 songs. The atmosphere is relaxed regarding the music of both artists. Allerseelen keeps it close to the atmosphere and sound such as we got to know on previous albums such as Edelweiss and Abenteuerliches Herz. Still an industrial touch with the sampling, ritual because of the repeating patterns, yet with a warm sound to which the violin and accordeon play a major part. Something that sets Allerseelen apart from the rest and keeps it being surprising is that at times there are unexpected rhythms and sounds used in songs, such as one can hear in 'Zu Spaeter Stunde', where a minimal electro rhythm creates the base layer for more traditional sounding instruments. Gerhard does vocal contributions in the songs of Sangre Cavallum, that due to the electric guitar of Jorge Ricardo at times have gotten a slight psychedelic musical touch such as you can hear in 'Wein, Blut der Erde' or 'Weinwalzer'. Barco do Vinho is relaxing music and this perfectly invokes a relaxed state of mind, that immediately makes you long back to the area and the glass of wine which is sung and played about. Finally, i can add that the artwork is truly splendid, with authentic pictures about the wine production in the rural Gallaecia. Really recommended!

  ?Sieben Fässer Wein können uns nicht gefährlich sein" erkannte bereits Roland Kaiser. Was dem alternden Schlagerbarden sien Uhl, ist dem anderen sien Nachtigall. Von daher veröffentlicht der ALLERSEELige Gerhard nun mit seinen Freunden von SANGRE CAVALLUM eine Silberscheibe über das alkoholische Getränk, welches wie kein anderes für Lebenslust und -kultur steht. Dabei handelt es sich um keine Split im klassischen Sinne, wo die Künstler nebeneinander her musizieren, hier befruchtete und unterstützte man sich permanent gegenseitig. Zuallererst fällt aber die hochwertige/ stilvolle Verpackung auf, welche in gewisser Weise den ruhigen Geist des Weines in die Hände des Klangkonsumenten portiert. Das mediterrane Flair, versinnbildlicht auch durch Album- und Songtitel, sorgt für weitere Entspannung, die in den einzelnen Liedern allerdings nicht immer rüberkommt. Vielmehr herrscht bei den 4 ALLERSEELEN-Stücken bisweilen eine unterschwellige Aggressivität. Ihnen gemein ist eine reduzierte Instrumentierung, teilweise werden nur Samples bzw. Loops eingesetzt, über die Kadmons prägnanter Sprechgesang gelegt wurde. Das ergibt eine monoton-hypnotische Stimmung, wenn man bereit ist, sich auf die Kompositionen einzulassen. Oberflächlich betrachtet mag das bisweilen eintönig klingen, wenn man aber tiefer eintaucht, offenbart insbesondere ?In Vino Veritas" Gerhards Vorliebe für DAF, natürlich in einem etwas anderen Kontext. ?Zauberblut" wurde bereits den Besuchern des Triumvirat-Festivals präsentiert und steht metaphorisch natürlich auch wieder für den magischen Rebensaft. Musikalisch ist beispielsweise bei ?Zu später Stunde" ein beinahe stumpfer Technobeat die Basis des Liedes, welches mit Folk Musik wirklich kaum mehr etwas gemein hat. Ein weiterer Beweis für die Vielseitigkeit des Projekts ALLERSEELEN, welches man nicht lieben aber respektieren muss. B. Ardo und R. Angel von SANGRE CAVALLUM beteiligten sich an Gesang und Songwriting und schlagen somit den Bogen zur ?zweiten Halbzeit", das Glas natürlich halb voll und nicht leer.. Ihre eigenen Stücke wirken wärmer, was insbesondere an der Verwendung von handgemachten Instrumenten liegt. Schon sehr beeindruckend, was der Herr Ardo laut Booklet so alles spielen kann, ein richtiges Ein-Mann-Orchester. ?Wein, Blut der Erde" wartet mit mystischen Klängen und wiederum Gerhards eindringlicher Stimme auf. Die folgenden beiden Traktate betonen insbesondere die Verbindung von Wasser, Leidenschaft und Melancholie. In Anbetracht der kleinen Weinbarken, welche ja auf für den Titel dieses Werks Pate standen, ein optimales Sujet. Zarte Song-Miniaturen mit Akustikgitarren und Chorälen ausgestattet verweisen auf die hart arbeiten Menschen vergangener Zeiten, für die Selbstverwirklichung noch kein Thema war. Der Weinwalzer, der über einen entsprechenden Grundrhythmus, verfügt kommt zum Schluss dann beschwingt und fast ein wenig kindlich-naiv daher. Der Alkohol pulsiert mittlerweile im Blut, ja er ist eine Liaison mit ihm eingegangen... Für Anhänger beider Formationen wie auch avantgardistischen Liedguts allgemein eine sehr interessante Veröffentlichung voller Flair, die man ?Achtung, Klischee! ? am besten bei einem süffigen Glaserl Rotwein genießt. Und wenn man die Limited Edition erwirbt, bekommt man die dazu nötige Flasche gleich Frei Haus geliefert!

  Ein Album gewidmet den portugiesischen Schiffern, die mit ihren Booten den Wein aus der Region Callaecia bis nach Porto transportierten. Dies ist der konzeptionelle Hintergrund der gemeinsamen Arbeit von Allerseelen und Sangre Cavallum, die beide mit jeweils vier Liedern vertreten sind und hier mit lyrischen und poetischen Worten nicht nur die harte Arbeit der Schiffer beschreiben, sondern auch die Vorzüge des Weines und seinem Genuss. Die eigentliche musikalische Kollaboration der österreichisch-portugiesischen Musikantengemeinschaft beschränkt sich dabei in der Hauptsache auf den Gesang, während die musikalischen Fundamente von Gerhard bzw. Sangre Cavallum gesetzt werden, so dass die eigene musikalische Identität der beiden Projekte gewahrt wird. Im Falle von Sange Cavallum bedeutet dies eine nach wie vor faszinierende Mischung aus portugiesischer Folklore und neofolkloristischen Elementen, die in vier betörende und melancholische Lieder munden, aus denen vor allem der ?Weinwalzer" und das von Gerhard gesungene ?Wein, Blut der Erde" hervorzuheben sind. Allerseelen führen ihren musikalisch eingeschlagenen Weg weiterhin fort und setzen neben ihren ohnehin vorhandenen psychedelischen und rhythmusbetonten Komponenten auf einen stärkeren folkloristischen Einfluss, der, angereichert mit verschiedenen Samples rauschender Wellen oder im Wasser schwimmender Schiffe ein Bild der Schiffer bei ihrer Arbeit vermittelt. Anspieltipps hier sind ?Zauberblut" und das vielleicht bereits bekannte ?In Vino Veritas". Eine wirklich wundervolle Split-CD dieser beiden Ausnahmeprojekte, deren einziger Makel darin besteht, viel zu kurz geraten zu sein.

Allerseelen's mastermind Gerhard has been fascinated with southern Europe for quite some time now, so this conceptual split with Portugal's Sangre Cavallum is but a logical continuation of his spiritual wanderings. As is always the case with neofolk, _Barco do Vinho_ is heavy on mysticism, although this time the main subject is a tad unusual -- namely the sacred European wine drink, a.k.a. blood of the earth. First on the split are four tracks by Allerseelen, the first one in Portuguese -- with lyrics recited by Sangre Cavallum's A. Rangel. The sound is what you might expect from the Austrian post-industrialist Gerhard: a peculiar neofolk / pop hybrid with repetitive vocal chants, simple acoustic arrangements and monotonous beats. Typically, the Allerseelen songs are not particularly catchy, but prove to be effective and even enjoyable on further listens. Sangre Cavallum's part of this album is quite different. The band hails from the region of Callaecia, northern Portugal, and is highly influenced by local folk tradition. Therefore their sound is a lot more pastoral and somewhat richer than Allerseelen's. Sangre Cavallum's four songs are typically enchanting, richly textured neofolk, sorrowful and sometimes epic, employing lots of traditional acoustic instruments, decent vocals and evocative choirs. The nine-minute masterpiece "Rabello", for example, is one of the better neofolk tracks you're likely to come upon these days. The strongest point of _Barco do Vinho_ is that it is by no means a mechanically put together split record, but instead a coherent concept release by two very different bands that work very well together.
